Norquist: Republicans Will Impeach Obama If He Doesn’t Extend Bush Tax Cuts | ThinkProgress.

“Anti-tax activist Grover Norquist has long held a tight grip on the marionette strings of the GOP. Wielding undue influence as the head of the Americans for Tax Reform, Norquist ensures that Republican lawmakers sign his anti-tax pledge and threatens them withelectoral defeat should they even think of deviating from it. Norquist has marked a successful few years, killing the deficit super committee agreementbatting down a tax increase on millionaires, and, of course, ensuring the extension of the Bush tax cuts.

Pleased with his headway, Norquist is now mapping out how he can ensure further anti-tax victories by securing Republican majorities. In an interview with the National Journal, he mused that a GOP mandate would obviously enact an extension of the Bush tax cuts, work to maintain a repatriation holiday for corporate profits, and even pass House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) plan that jeopardizes Medicare. But when asked what Republicans should do if faced with a Democratic majority that won’t keep the tax cuts, Norquist had a simple answer: “impeach” Obama.

NJ: What if the Democrats still have control? What’s your scenario then?

NORQUIST: Obama can sit there and let all the tax [cuts] lapse, and then the Republicans will have enough votes in the Senate in 2014 to impeach. The last year, he’s gone into this huddle where he does everything by executive order. He’s made no effort to work with Congress.

Norquist certainly revels in his power, but suggesting Republicans impeach the president over tax cuts is wildly outlandish. According to the constitution, the president, vice president, or public officials can only be impeached for “treason, bribery, and other high crimes and misdemeanors.” Preserving a tax cut that gives more to the top 1 percent than the average income of the 99 percent hardly qualifies. But if Norquist’s only goal is to “crush the other team,” it seems he’ll stop at nothing to do so.”

Republicans Should Take Remedial Science:

It’s too bad that just last week John Huntsman dropped out of the GOP Presidential nomination race.  Not that I loved Huntsman stance on a plethora of issues but what I did like was that he has been willing to say the unsayable about the G.O.P. — namely, that it is becoming the “anti-science party.”

What?  Anti-Science?  To see what Mr. Huntsman means, consider recent statements by two men who are contenders for the G.O.P. nomination: Rick Perry and Mitt Romney.  Mr. Perry, the governor of Texas, recently made headlines by dismissing evolution as “just a theory,” one that has “got some gaps in it” — an observation that will come as news to the vast majority of biologists.  Even more concerning is his stance that global warming:  “I think there are a substantial number of scientists who have manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects. And I think we are seeing almost weekly, or even daily, scientists are coming forward and questioning the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing the climate to change.”

Romney on the other hand is a flip-flopper on the subject and basically panders to his base in each of the primary states by casting doubt on the human connection to our warming planet.  Denying science also is a favorite pastime of Rick Santorum and he’s probably the worst denier of all.  Santorum, not only denies evolution, but has been an active anti-evolutionist in the past. In other words, he has made attacking fundamental scientific knowledge a key priority.

In 2002, Santorum wrote an op-ed calling the doctrine of “intelligent design” (ID) “a legitimate scientific theory that should be taught in science classes.” He even pushed an amendment to the 2001 education bill to support ID. For more on Santorum’s anti-evolution advocacy, see here.  He’s also an opponent of stem cell research which has the potential to cure many of the diseases, conditions, etc. which have plagued humans for hundreds of years.

So besides the fact that 99% of scientists are in complete opposition to the stances of the aforementioned people, why do I care that some people refuse to take science seriously?  First I think we can all agree that the scientific method is the official “process” by which all hypothesis are either proven or rejected.  A theory is developed only through the scientific method, meaning it is the final result of a series of rigorous processes. And once a theory is considered proven, it is taken as fact and used to make predictions of events, advance technology, and/or improve life on Earth.

The main thing about Presidential candidates who deny what science is telling us – they demonstrate a tremendous inability to think clearly, to analyze deeply and to seek proper conclusions.  They think with their gut, demonstrating why it is apparently the stupidest part of their anatomy.

And they amply demonstrate all the reasons why they should not be placed into arguably the most powerful job in the world.

Making decisions based on non-facts, lies and distortions – something every one of them has displayed when denying science – is not something I would like to see in the person responsible for life and death matters as President.  Haven’t we seen throughout human history leaders who denied science rule over some of the meanest periods of civilizations?  The AIDS policies of the former South African president Thabo Mbeki’s government were directly responsible for the avoidable deaths of more than a third of a million people in the country, according to research by Harvard university.

It is completely unacceptable in this day and age to deny theories, events, etc. that are generally accepted by the scientific community as fact.  It is dangerous because it sets us on a path of grave danger, one where life as we (humans) know it would be altered beyond imagine.  Can you fathom the idea of countries going to war over water?  Of course not, but if we don’t cede to generally accepted scientific principles and instead interject faith, morality, etc into the mix then we’re  going down a path that is catastrophic.

With 52% of Republicans reported as not accepting evolution, a large proportion thinking the world is less than 10,000 years old and who continually question the legitimacy of medical research, it is not surprising that the GOP peddle to this type of  lunacy.  However it is completely unfair to subject our children and our children’s children to a world that is worse than the one we have currently.  I fear that is where we are headed should the GOP take over in 2012.

Happy Belated New Year

Augh, I suck as I haven’t written in the blog for almost 1 month.  One of my New Years Resolutions is to write at least 1x a week if not more so let’s hope I can stick with that.  Regardless Happy New Year and I thought I’d post something I read about 30 things you should try and do this upcoming year for a better “you”.   “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”  I have no idea who said that but thought it was appropriate.

  1. Stop spending time with the wrong people. – Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you.  If someone wants you in their life, they’ll make room for you.  You shouldn’t have to fight for a spot.  Never, ever insist yourself to someone who continuously overlooks your worth.  And remember, it’s not the people that stand by your side when you’re at your best, but the ones who stand beside you when you’re at your worst that are your true friends.
  2. Stop running from your problems. – Face them head on.  No, it won’t be easy.  There is no person in the world capable of flawlessly handling every punch thrown at them.  We aren’t supposed to be able to instantly solve problems.  That’s not how we’re made.  In fact, we’re made to get upset, sad, hurt, stumble and fall.  Because that’s the whole purpose of living – to face problems, learn, adapt, and solve them over the course of time.  This is what ultimately molds us into the person we become.
  3. Stop lying to yourself. – You can lie to anyone else in the world, but you can’t lie to yourself.  Our lives improve only when we take chances, and the first and most difficult chance we can take is to be honest with ourselves.  Read The Road Less Traveled.
  4. Stop putting your own needs on the back burner. – The most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much, and forgetting that you are special too.  Yes, help others; but help yourself too.  If there was ever a moment to follow your passion and do something that matters to you, that moment is now.
  5. Stop trying to be someone you’re not. – One of the greatest challenges in life is being yourself in a world that’s trying to make you likeeveryone else.  Someone will always be prettier, someone will always be smarter, someone will always be younger, but they will never be you.  Don’t change so people will like you.  Be yourself and the right people will love the real you.
  6. Stop trying to hold onto the past. – You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading your last one.
  7. Stop being scared to make a mistake. – Doing something and getting it wrong is at least ten times more productive than doing nothing.  Every success has a trail of failures behind it, and every failure is leading towards success.  You end up regretting the things you did NOT do far more than the things you did.
  8. Stop berating yourself for old mistakes. – We may love the wrong person and cry about the wrong things, but no matter how things go wrong, one thing is for sure, mistakes help us find the person and things that are right for us.  We all make mistakes, have struggles, and even regret things in our past.  But you are not your mistakes, you are not your struggles, and you are here NOW with the power to shape your day and your future.  Every single thing that has ever happened in your life is preparing you for a moment that is yet to come.
  9. Stop trying to buy happiness. – Many of the things we desire are expensive.  But the truth is, the things that really satisfy us are totally free – love, laughter and working on our passions.
  10. Stop exclusively looking to others for happiness. – If you’re not happy with who you are on the inside, you won’t be happy in a long-term relationship with anyone else either.  You have to create stability in your own life first before you can share it with someone else.  Read Stumbling on Happiness.
  11. Stop being idle. – Don’t think too much or you’ll create a problem that wasn’t even there in the first place.  Evaluate situations and take decisive action.  You cannot change what you refuse to confront.  Making progress involves risk.  Period!  You can’t make it to second base with your foot on first.
  12. Stop thinking you’re not ready. – Nobody ever feels 100% ready when an opportunity arises.  Because most great opportunities in life force us to grow beyond our comfort zones, which means we won’t feel totally comfortable at first.
  13. Stop getting involved in relationships for the wrong reasons. – Relationships must be chosen wisely.  It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company.  There’s no need to rush.  If something is meant to be, it will happen – in the right time, with the right person, and for the best reason. Fall in love when you’re ready, not when you’re lonely.
  14. Stop rejecting new relationships just because old ones didn’t work. – In life you’ll realize that there is a purpose for everyone you meet.  Some will test you, some will use you and some will teach you.  But most importantly, some will bring out the best in you.
  15. Stop trying to compete against everyone else. – Don’t worry about what others doing better than you.  Concentrate on beating your own records every day.  Success is a battle between YOU and YOURSELF only.
  16. Stop being jealous of others. – Jealousy is the art of counting someone else’s blessings instead of your own.  Ask yourself this:  “What’s something I have that everyone wants?”
  17. Stop complaining and feeling sorry for yourself. – Life’s curveballs are thrown for a reason – to shift your path in a direction that is meant for you.  You may not see or understand everything the moment it happens, and it may be tough.  But reflect back on those negative curveballs thrown at you in the past.  You’ll often see that eventually they led you to a better place, person, state of mind, or situation.  So smile!  Let everyone know that today you are a lot stronger than you were yesterday, and you will be.
  18. Stop holding grudges. – Don’t live your life with hate in your heart.  You will end up hurting yourself more than the people you hate.  Forgiveness is not saying, “What you did to me is okay.”  It is saying, “I’m not going to let what you did to me ruin my happiness forever.”  Forgiveness is the answer… let go, find peace, liberate yourself!  And remember, forgiveness is not just for other people, it’s for you too.  If you must, forgive yourself, move on and try to do better next time.
  19. Stop letting others bring you down to their level. – Refuse to lower your standards to accommodate those who refuse to raise theirs.
  20. Stop wasting time explaining yourself to others. – Your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe it anyway.  Just do what you know in your heart is right.
  21. Stop doing the same things over and over without taking a break. – The time to take a deep breath is when you don’t have time for it.  If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting.  Sometimes you need to distance yourself to see things clearly.
  22. Stop overlooking the beauty of small moments. – Enjoy the little things, because one day you may look back and discover they were the big things.  The best portion of your life will be the small, nameless moments you spend smiling with someone who matters to you.
  23. Stop trying to make things perfect. – The real world doesn’t reward perfectionists, it rewards people who get things done.  Read Getting Things Done.
  24. Stop following the path of least resistance. – Life is not easy, especially when you plan on achieving something worthwhile.  Don’t take the easy way out.  Do something extraordinary.
  25. Stop acting like everything is fine if it isn’t. – It’s okay to fall apart for a little while.  You don’t always have to pretend to be strong, and there is no need to constantly prove that everything is going well.  You shouldn’t be concerned with what other people are thinking either – cry if you need to – it’s healthy to shed your tears.  The sooner you do, the sooner you will be able to smile again.
  26. Stop blaming others for your troubles. – The extent to which you can achieve your dreams depends on the extent to which you take responsibility for your life.  When you blame others for what you’re going through, you deny responsibility – you give others power over that part of your life.
  27. Stop trying to be everything to everyone. – Doing so is impossible, and trying will only burn you out.  But making one person smile CAN change the world.  Maybe not the whole world, but their world.  So narrow your focus.
  28. Stop worrying so much. – Worry will not strip tomorrow of its burdens, it will strip today of its joy.  One way to check if something is worth mulling over is to ask yourself this question: “Will this matter in one year’s time?  Three years?  Five years?”  If not, then it’s not worth worrying about.
  29. Stop focusing on what you don’t want to happen. – Focus on what you do want to happen.  Positive thinking is at the forefront of every great success story.  If you awake every morning with the thought that something wonderful will happen in your life today, and you pay close attention, you’ll often find that you’re right.
  30. Stop being ungrateful. – No matter how good or bad you have it, wake up each day thankful for your life.  Someone somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs.  Instead of thinking about what you’re missing, try thinking about what you have that everyone else is missing.

The Payroll Tax Part Deux!

The debate whether to extend the payroll tax keeps getting better and better each day.  As I said the other day Obama threatened to veto any bill that comes to his desk that extends the payroll tax but also includes rides which threaten the environment (approving the Keystone Pipeline and easing environmental regulations on steel producers).  Well today the House blocked another attempt to extend the tax and Speaker Boehner again defied the President’s veto threat and insisted that the extension must be tied to approval of the environmental riders.

As much as environmentalists don’t like the Keystone XL project, they will likely be even more concerned over the other environmental provision Boehner mentioned: a bill that would exempt boilers and small incinerators from regulation, allowing them to burn any hazardous waste without oversight.  The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that waiving those regulations would cause the premature deaths of some 8,100 people a year.  Does anyone see a problem with that?  Why is nobody talking about this in the media?

Sometimes I feel like I’m on drugs when I read what the GOP is doing.  These guys are so far out of touch with reality and with what their constituents want it blows my mind.

The truly disgusting part of this is the continuous adding of unrelated riders to bills to “sneak this & that” into effect because it’s less likely to pass if standing alone or unwanted by the people … We need to DEMAND that Congress attach NO UNRELATED RIDERS to ALL BILLS that do not DIRECTLY contribute to that bills purpose/function being fulfilled. BOTH parties do it and it needs to stop! Let each party stand up clear in their proposed bill/legislation without hiding it in other bills so the people KNOW who voted for what and CAN’T continue to mud-sling each other with half truths like Mr. X voted against body armor for combat soldiers, when what he REALLY did was vote no/veto that proposal because it was tied to riders allowing cancelling of safety regulations for surgical hospitals etc.

To top it all off I then found this last comment that again shows that the Republicans main goal is to make Obama a 1 term President.

Some Republicans noted that Obama’s comments the day before opposing any effort to link extending the payroll tax cut to the Keystone pipeline helped rally support for the plan. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, leader of the fiscally conservative Republican Study Group, said he supports the bill, adding: “Frankly the fact that the president doesn’t like it makes me like it even more.”

If I heard a statement like that from a representative in a district where I lived I’d start a recall campaign immediately….f-ing morons

My phone call with John Boehner’s office…..

Rep. John Boehner, Blocking Position

The payroll tax extension is the topic of the moment and the party that “never raises taxes” just can’t seem to get on board with ensuring that taxes don’t go up by over $1,000 for middle/lower class Americans.  Correction, they will vote for it if the Democrats agree to remove some environmental regulations that would allow steel producers to release more poisonous gasses (Boiler MACT Regulations) into the air we breathe, plus speed up the approval of the very controversial Keystone pipeline.  Uh, are you kidding me?  What does a tax cut have to do with easing environmental regulations and making the air more dangerous to breathe?  Well according to John Bohener, it’s job creation.  You see Speaker Bohener does not want to extend the tax break to the people who need it most but he Will Allow it if he (Republicans) are able to extort concessions on unrelated items that ensure the 1% keep getting richer.

Given that we all know that 99.99% of Republicans have signed the “Norquist” pledge to never raise taxes on anybody I thought this would be a slam dunk for both sides.  But after reading this I just had to call John’s office to get official comment.  I called and asked his aides specifically did John Boner Boehner sign the Norquist pledge to never raise taxes on Americans under any circumstances.  They said yes.  So logically I asked what was the hold up on this this tax cut and why was it being held hostage to environmental riders that have no relation?  Their answer, “Mr Boehner believes that in addition to cutting taxes that we also need to stimulate job growth and Mr.Obama’s overzealous, over regulation has been hindering our country’s economic recovery.  So therefore he wants to go the extra mile for the people!”  Dead silence…..

“So you’re telling me that Mr.Boehner is willing to raise taxes on the middle class if he can’t get these completely non-related items passed?” I asked.

“It depends but again Speaker Boehner feels like this is right for his constituents” the aide said.  At this point I knew that nothing else could be said but ended with “you mean the 1% right?”  The man kind of sneered and I hung up.

So basically they kill legislation that would raise taxes on millionaires, but want a bribe to NOT raise taxes on people who make less than 100K…..these are the kind of people we’re dealing with.  Complete hypocritical @ssholes!
